Piston Type Sampling Valves are widely employed in the sampling of thick slurries and viscous materials because their design provides little to no dead space within the valve and vessel or line connection. The piston completely fills the valve and connection bores and provides a self-cleaning action during the closing stroke of the valve. The common design of this type of valve also provides a very long stroke to completely withdraw the piston from the media flow.
Typical designs for a manually operated piston type valve used for draining or sampling liquids utilize a hand wheel attached to a threaded stem which in turn is connected to the piston. The stem typically turns in a fixed threaded bushing that is generally found in the yoke (or bonnet) or the piston itself. Rotary motion of the hand wheel causes a linear movement of the piston. To minimize torque, most designs use stems with a pitch of 4-8 threads per inch and a single lead. In a typical sampling valve, the stroke from a flush position, no piston extension, to fully open is 2 1/2“. This translates to fifteen rotations in most applications.
Although the effort used to draw a sample using a piston type valve is greater than using a ball valve, the advantages quickly outweigh any of the disadvantages. For instance, ball valves are operated with a quarter-turn. Ball valves allow material to accumulate around the ball and prevent a representative sample from being drawn unless the valve is properly purged.
Strahmans new Quick Advance Sampling Valve offers all of the features typically found in piston type sampling valves with the convenience of a quick open/close feature of a ball valve. The QA-700 uses a rack and gear combination. This allows the valve to have a full piston design within the valve while traveling just 1/3 turn. This results in a valve that opens and closes approximately 45 times faster than a standard SV-700 with a zero inch piston extension. This results in less time and labor required to collect a true, representative sample. The QA-700 also features a safety stop detent that prevents the valve from opening under process pressure. The QA-700 is rated to ANSI Class 300 and is available in the same materials as Strahmans standard SV-700 line. The new QA-700 will be available with standard packing rings and initially with zero or two inch piston extensions. Conversion kits for existing valves are also available.
The QA-700 will be available for sale during the second quarter of 2009. For more information, please contact the Customer Service Department at (484) 893-5080.

March 10, 2009
Strahman Valves announced the launch of its new e-commerce site, www.strahmanvalves.com, designed specifically to simplify the ordering process for industrial customers. “It is our intention,” said Kevin Carroll, Vice President – Wash Down Business Unit & Marketing, “to have the site eliminate much of the time and paperwork involved with fax orders while helping us streamline service to our customers.”
According to Mr. Carroll, “The new online shopping capability enables customers to read about Strahman products that are available, what their features and capabilities are, and then order with a credit card. We will direct ship all orders, enabling fast turnaround from the time the order is placed until it is delivered to their facility.”
The site includes Strahman’s line of Mixing Units, Spray Nozzles, Hoses, and Sampling Valves, in its “Online Store.” When a category is chosen, a pictorial array of products available appears. “Similar to other online shopping sites, the customer need only click on the graphic of the photo he is interested in, and a full product description, including pricing, will come up,” adds Mr. Carroll. “The customer then merely needs to add the product to his shopping cart and proceed to electronic check out to complete the order.”
In addition to its on-line store shopping capability, the Strahman Valves’ site includes a literature section where customers can either download or order brochures and product sheets. There is also a way to access customer support, and a rep locator for finding national and international sales representatives who are close to their facilities.
“Our customers are always looking for faster ways to get some of our time critical products to them,” concludes Mr. Carroll. “This is but one way in which we are responding—taking advantage of technology and rapid, worldwide delivery services to keep them up and running.”
